Description
Pele, The Goddess of Hawaii and her Volcanoes is the daughter of the Earth Goddess Haumea, the goddess of fertility and childbirth and Kanehoalanil, the god associated with the ocean. She lives in the glowing cauldron Halemaumau of Mount Kilauea, where she receives the souls of the dead and regenerates them with fire. Her home is believed to be the fire pit called Halemaʻumaʻu crater, at the summit caldera of Kīlauea, one of the Earth's most active volcanoes; but her domain encompasses all volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawaii. Although she lives in one volcano, her domain stretches to all volcanoes of the Big Island. Her numerous siblings include Kāne Milohai, Kamohoaliʻi, Nāmaka along with her sisters named Hiʻiaka, the most famous being Hiʻiakaikapoliopele, goddess of clouds, along with Poliʻahu, her rival, the snow Goddess and her sisters Lilinoe (a Goddess of fine rain), Waiau, and Kahoupokane that creates thunder, rain, and lightning. Pele is known for her power, passion, jealousy, and capriciousness.
